Support Awaaz Do and make a difference

In the beginning of this month, I made a post about this movement started by UNICEF for the development of under privileged children. Awaaz Do, (the name of the movement) provides us a platform to ensure that no child in this country is denied his/her basic right to education.

Since then, this movement has been going really strong and have been achieving its targets. Recently Bollywood actress, Priyanka chopra joined hands for the same. I am sure this would bring more and more people to join this movement.

5th Semester started. OMG, its abut to end..!

Yeah, that was my story in 5th semester. The semester after which I should be 5/8th of an engineer (mathematically..!). It just began and is about to end. Today I gave 1st of my six papers and ope I am finally done with DCS. No more of it, please..!

But whatever be the case I have my exams line up now, 30th, 1st, (yeah, you read it right..! 1st day of new year, 1-1-11, and my university have appointed me for a paper. Just imagine..!!), and going on till 8th of Jan. After that I hopefully would be a free bird and would be catching on the party scene, though would be missing the new year bashes... :(

And as the tradition goes, my semester exams have started, and so the movie time..!!
If you want more about the tradition regarding exams, refer to these posts..!!
And for this time, it's a culmination of books and movies..! Though I am a little inclined towards the movies..! Also taking my time are cricket matches that are going on. (Read: Ashes and Castle Cup)

Books I have been reading..!

The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook: A Tale of Sex, Money, Genius and Betrayal The Lost Symbol The Smashing Book
So, now I must go back and study..! Otherwise, it could spell trouble for me...! :-P

Time Magazine: "Time froze for Sachin Tendulkar"

A quote in Time's Magazine describing the greatest player of all time to play cricket, Sachin Tendulkar.

"When Sachin Tendulkar traveled to Pakistan to face one of the finest bowling attacks ever assembled in cricket, Michael Schumacher was yet to race a F1 car, Lance Armstrong had never been to the Tour de France, Diego Maradona was still the captain of a world champion Argentina team, Pete Sampras had never won a Grand Slam.

When Tendulkar embarked on a glorious career taming Imran and company, Roger Federer was a name unheard of; Lionel Messi was in his nappies, Usain Bolt was an unknown kid in the Jamaican backwaters. The Berlin Wall was still intact, USSR was one big, big country, Dr Manmohan Singh was yet to "open" the Nehruvian economy. It seems while Time was having his toll on every individual on the face of this planet, he excused one man. Time stands frozen in front of Sachin Tendulkar. We have had champions, we have had legends, but we have never had another Sachin Tendulkar and we never will."

    Android Application - ColorNote

ColorNote is a notepad app for Google Android with a handful of cool features that make it useful not just for taking notes, but for setting reminders and writing to do lists.

First, you can create two types of notes, a text note or a checklist. Both types of notes can be color coded, so if you like to mark all of your gardening tasks in green and all of your schoolwork in yellow, you can do that.

If you choose the checklist, you can add as many items as you like and use the edit window to rearrange the order. When you pull up an existing checklist, all you have to do is tap on an item to cross it off, making ColorNote a handy app for creating shopping lists or other to do lists.

You can also search your notes or sort them by the time they were created, by color, or alphabetically. And you can set reminders for any note, so if you create a note reminding you to call the dentist, for instance, your phone will bug you with a reminder at a set time.

ColorNote also includes a home screen widget that you can use to add a shortcut to any note to your home screen. You can tap the shortcut to pull up that individual note or checklist without first having to open the full program. The shortcuts are labeled with the name of the note and use the same color you assigned to the note in ColorNote.

ColorNote is available as a free download from the Android Market.

Google Chrome 8 Stable Build Released

Chrome users who appreciate having the latest and greatest things will be pleased to know that version 8 of Google's Web browser has debuted in stable form. Version 8.0.552.215 has been launched officially on 2nd December 2010.

Fair warning: don't expect this new release to revolutionize your online experience. The biggest single change the average user is likely to notice appears to be the integration of the PDF viewer we've been following since mid-June.

Google ChromeQuite a lot has been altered under the hood, however. A post on the Google Chrome Releases blog noted that Chrome 8 benefits from "over 800 bug fixes and stability improvements," so users are sure to be much better off.

More than a few independent researchers are better off thanks to Chrome 8, too, in the sense that Google's bug bounty program continued to achieve results. The blog post listed five different problems people were paid $500 or $1,000 for discovering.

The post stated, as well, "We'd also like to extend thanks to Sergey Glazunov and Marc Schoenefeld for finding bugs during the development cycle such that they never reached a stable build."

    Cost effective Android Phones

Phones with Google's Android are being baked and sent to the market one after the other. This open-source mobile operating system has been more than a blessing to many phone makers, who had the expertise in making the hardware, but didn't really have a polished OS with enhanced functionality to run them on. The best part about Android is that it's free for any manufacturer to take and slap on their devices. Also, there isn't a stringent hardware checklist to follow, unlike Microsoft's Windows Phone 7.

This enables companies to roll out cost-effective smartphones that are within the reach of many. Not to say that they have to compromise on certain features to get that price down, and the degradation in the performance of these when compared to the flagship Android phones is noticeable. But considering the lackluster interface, laggy performance and fragmented availability of apps on phones that were sold before Android was born, things definitely have gotten better.
Some of the phones under that fall in these categories are:
    1. LG Optimus P500
    2. Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8
    3. Samsung Galaxy 3 i5801
    4. HTC wildfire
    5. Motorola Quench XT3
    6. Dell XCD35
Most of these 'cheaper phones' running on android OS have these basic features:

    • Touchscreen Phones: The interfaces are intuitive, the touch response is accurate. Or we can say, touchscreens are really in these phones.

    • They are 3.5G ready (i.e. HSDPA compatible). This is good since we're witnessing private operators roll out 3G services one by one. Other forms of connectivity i.e. Wi-fi, Bluetooth and data cable are present as well. Lastly, all have a GPS chip that is necessary for extremely nifty apps like Google Maps.

    • These have capacitive screens that are optimized to be used with fingers.

    • They also happen to have accelerometers for automatic rotation of the content on the screen according to the way you hold it.

Apart from  other basic features like, they all can make a call..!! Have the ability to store your data and can also be used to send SMS/MMS..!!

    Edmodo: Facebook for Teachers

Edomodo is a social network designed for teacher/student interaction with an emphasis on quick communication, polling, assignment sharing, and more.

Edmodo is a teaching tool modeled after social networks with a focus on communication and not merely distribution of information from the teacher and grade reporting, although you can certainly use those functions easily enough. As an educator you can share files, links, assignments, and grades as well as issue alerts and updates, dialogue with your students on a Facebook-like wall, survey your students, and manage map out your class syllabus on a public calendar. As a student you can contact your instructors directly, message other students, interact in the public discussion spaces, and even access Edmodo from your mobile phone via their mobile-optimized page to check assignments and more.

Edmodo is a free service. Visit the Edmodo Guide and read a detailed breakdown of the teacher and student features.

    Royalty-Free music services

Last week, I was developing a video and required some background music for it. In general, I make a friend of mine to prepare the musical composition required for my video but this time she was not in town. And I had to finish off the video, so I fed the big brother about my requirements and it threw up some interesting resources for Royalty-Free music. Royalty free music means that you either download music tracks for free or you pay a one-time fee to gain access to music. Then, you can do everything the original artist allows you to make with it and for as many times as you want.

Here I share some of the Royalty-Free music services.
    • Jamendo

Jamendo is an online music community where musicians publish their songs in a royalty-free fashion under a Creative Commons license. Jamendo is free to join and you don't even have to register to download music. Tracks are available either in the MP3 or the OGG file formats and you can download any song by receiving a link at your email address or using P2P sharing networks.
      http://www.jamendo.com/

    • Opsound

Opsound is a royalty-free music service where you can download free, open music tracks without even registering. All music tracks submitted by indie artists are licensed under a Creative Commons license and are also available for commercial use. Downloads are either available in the OGG or the MP3 file format. No Pro account is available.

WikiLeaks not setting in the sunset..!

WikiLeaks is currently not available at WikiLeaks.org. It recently lost its DNS service provider, and the site itself has been battered by DDoS attacks for more than a week now – ever since it first started releasing secret embassy cables.

However, when highly coveted information once spreads on the web, there’s no stopping it. Case in point: WikiLeaks currently has several hundred mirrors, and although some of these mirrors are incomplete, slow or perhaps even completely unavailable, it’s highly unlikely that any effort will be able to exterminate them all.

Obviously, WikiLeaks was never about one website. As large U.S. companies such as Amazon and PayPal fold under pressure, refusing to give service to WikiLeaks, thousands of enthusiasts help WikiLeaks out by hosting a mirror of the site, uploading a torrent with the latest cables or by donating to the site.

Some of them do it because they are advocates of free speech, some of them do it because they support the cause, and some do it just for the heck of it. And with simple instructions on how to set up a WikiLeaks mirror readily available, anyone can do it. The result? Regardless of what any nation, company or organization wants, WikiLeaks isn’t going away.

A social network song for Facebook and Twitter addicts

Recently, I came across this beautiful song describing Facebook and Twitter addicts..! Or I can say, depicting half the online population..!! An amazing piece of music and though its funny, it's true too. This is really Hilarious..!!

    Awaaz Do...

    Hi,

Recently I came across a startling fact that 8 million children in our country are denied their basic right to education. With the Right to Education Act making education free and compulsory, we must now join hands to help these children exercise this right.

UNICEF has started a movement Awaaz Do that provides us a platform to ensure that no child in this country is denied his/her basic right to education. I have joined this movement and I urge you to pledge your support to the cause.

    To join the cause,
SMS AWAAZDO to 53030 or log on to AwaazDo

Together we can make a difference. So let’s get started.

    Awaaz do!

P.S. - More posts regarding this noble cause would be published soon.

    Airtel: Brand revamp

Airtel, one of the leading telecom brands in India which has also successfully ventured into digital TV and broadband markets has pressed the revamp button. Airtel recently acquired Zain, an African telecom company and thus having more than 2000 crore customer at the moment. So, the revamp must have come focusing on the world-wide market.

Airtel plans to spend over 300 crore rupees globally to change the brand identity. It seems the new logo is inspired from zain's logo and looks like a rip off Vodafone (its biggest competitor) because of its heavily loaded red and white color.

    Wikipedia Meetup

Wikipedia is a vital, free-knowledge project used by millions of people all over the world, including in India. This ubiquitous resource includes millions of articles and covers myriad topics about India and its culture.
Although Wikipedia is an indispensable resource for millions, little is known about how this online encyclopedia is written and who it is written by.

This Sunday, October 31 at 6:30pm, anyone who is interested in learning more about this global public resource is invited to “Meet the Movement:” a talk with Jimmy Wales and members of the Wikimedia community in India. This talk is an opportunity to learn more about how Wikipedia works and why
participation from the people of India is integral to Wikimedia’s global free-knowledge movement.

Jimmy Wales, the iconic leader, who founded Wikipedia in 2001, will give a public talk about the history of Wikipedia and what the free knowledge movement means to India. For instance, 94 percent of page views from India are for the English Wikipedia, rather than Indic languages. What does that mean about the importance of Wikipedia in India and the needs of Indian users? After his talk, Wales will be joined by members of Wikimedia India, as well as Wikimedia Foundation Board member, Bishakha Datta, for a 30
minute open question and answer session with the audience.

    Date: Sunday October 31
    Time: 6.30 pm
Venue: Sophia Bhabha Hall, Sophia College campus, Bhulabhai Desai
    Road, Breach Candy, Mumbai 400026

This talk is open to the public on a first-come-first-seated basis.

    AIDS: The Untold Story

We should not miss even a single moment, expressing our love to our beloved ones...
Recently, I was checking the mails, when came across this beautifully written story. And can't resist the temptation to share it with the world. So here it is.

The alarm tore apart the silence in the room; starting off smoothly, slowly and steadily gaining pace and sound. The shade of a hand, rose in the darkness and started crawling in the surface; searching for something and in a few seconds it got hold of the alarm clock and killed the already loud tone. Hesitantly a figure rose on its knees, it was that of a nicely built man; he looked all around in the dim light, as if searching for something and switched on the lights by the bed side. The room was not as messed up as a young man’s, a bachelor’s room. There were quite a lot of books in the table and some clothes hung on his chair, the shelf was closed down and the room was pretty empty but for the table, the mattress, the study table and chair.

He opened the laptop lid and starred to the background wallpaper for a few seconds and opened the VOIP calling software in his laptop, and dialed a number from the contacts.

    Tringg….Tringgg…Tringg…..Tringg…..
    Hello Mamma…
Albertttt!!!..... You are so on time again, right at two! Where are you now baby?
I am way far off, Mamma… (Far away from you he whispered)…
Far?? So what time is it over there?
Time..? I just woke up now Mamma…
Why do you sound different? Have you caught cold or cough Alby?
    No Mamma…I am fine…
You said far, are you in the Siberians? Should be pretty cold out there…
    No Mamma…it’s not the cold! I said… I am fine…
Alby, it’s been three years now, when are you visiting me?
Soon Mamma, I gotta go now, next week…Mamma…
Oh… So soon again!! Love you Alby…
    You to Mamma…take care!

Its all about celebrating your life..!

    This is your life.
Years go by and nothing is as you imagined it would be.

Hope is exquisite, and at times, exquisitely disappointing. The love you always thought was love is shadowy and elusive. Dreams you dare to dream feel like wide-open doors to giant letdowns.

Teetering between the person you were, and the person you are becoming...
And this, all this in-between is your life. It is you.

You who is still wandering to know why he is here.
You who still looks for the reason for his existence.
You who still wanna know why it all happened to him.
You who still asks God, Why me??
You who still cries for all those missed opportunities.
You who is not satisfied and says, I deserved better..

CWG 2010: Better than what People had made it look

So, Delhi 2010 begins tomorrow. The XIX Common Wealth Games would be starting from tomorrow  in Delhi, India. Enough has already been said about its failures, about its dirty toilets, about missed deadlines etc. etc.

But what remained hidden was hard work of thousands of people who worked day and night to have these games, to have the best ever games, to make India proud and make world stand up and notice India. There have been mistakes, it could have been handled better, but remember India is hosting games of such high level for the first time. There has to be hiccups, though there have been more, but still a lot of good work has happened.

This is the time to stand and notice the good work.
This is the time to support all those who have made this happen.
This is the time to cheer for the games, for the athletes.
This is the time to come out as one and feel proud.
This is the time to say out loud,

    COME OUT AND PLAY!!

    Life is all about living..!

"Life has not been too good recently. There have been many hiccups and I have been struggling to find the real me. I don't know what's happening, and I really seek a change."

This was my Facebook status some days back. And I meant every bit of it. But then suddenly something happened. I don't know how? Was it a chat with a stranger. Or a message by a friend. Was it a poem I read or a faded memory that surfaced back..?
I don't know what was it. But something had happened and it had changed me for sure (at least my thinking..!!).
And my next status on Facebook was,

"Life is not about waiting for storm to pass. It's about dancing in the rain..!"

And since then, I have been happy. I have been dancing away my troubles, and when it looks like that nothing is happening. Gate is closed, and would not open, I created  a window. I know I am sounding douche, but this is what's happening with me lately.

What happens next? I have no idea.
Would I be able to sustain this attitude towards life? God only knows.
But one thing is for sure, I am loving it right now..!!
I am actually living my life.

'LIFE is a love affair. It is Poetry, and it is music. Don't ask ugly questions like what's the purpose? Just Live it, Enjoy it & Love it'

P.S. Hey, I have been busy lately and that's the reason have not been able to update the blog. And the hectic schedule ahead may lead to some more big intervals between the posts.

    Broadcasting Live on YouTube!!

The world largest video sharing service, YouTube is testing a new live streaming platform. The trial would continue for two days - September 13-14. The new service begins as a limited trail with four participating partners. YouTube had previously hosted live streaming of events such as the U2 concert at Rose Bowl and season three of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and many more. YouTube will evaluate the results of the test before planning a roll-out for its partners worldwide.

This new platform integrates live streaming directly into YouTube channels; all broadcasters need is a webcam or external USB/FireWire camera, when it is made available. Included in the test is a “Live Comments” module which lets you engage with the broadcaster and the broader YouTube community.

Google Instant Searches, 'Before You Type'

Google has rekindle its love for speedy Web searches with Google Instant, a new version of the search engine that displays results as you type.

When typing a search query with Google Instant, results appear after the first letter is entered, and they update as the user types. Marissa Mayer, Google's vice president of search and user experience, said results are actually delivered "before you type," because Google Instant predicts and automatically completes search terms.

According to Google, a typical searcher spends nine seconds entering a query, and 15 seconds searching for answers. Google hopes to shave two to five seconds per search using Google Instant.

    Innovative Advertising

I have always been inclined towards Marketing and Advertising. And have always appreciated good marketing techniques. The television advertisements, print Ads, online advertising all of them are entirely different and holds a different place in any company's marketing schemes.

Many advertisements attracts my attention and I have always wanted to share them here on JammySpeaks, but somehow have not been able to. But today an innovative advertisement by 'Tipp-Ex' made me sit up and make this post, and share it with you people.

We always talk about out of the box advertising. This one is 'OUT OF THE BOX', both literally and figuratively. See yourself to find out.

My favorites are, 'is' and 'kick'..!

P.S. - For you web designers out there, try the 'rescue'..!

    Review: Digital Photo Key-chain

Recently, I received a pink digital photo key-chain to review. This Digital Photo Key-chain is one small but cute gadget. No software to download, nothing to install. Just plug it through included USB and you are free to go..! Hence, it is very easy to send your photos to the key-chain. I love the fact that the buttons are in the back. But surely, the screen could have been a bit bigger. Looks are good, but only good..!

When he fell in Love: How it all started..??

I have returned with the second part of the story, When He Fell in Love...
I hope you like it.You can read the first part of the story here, When He Fell in Love...

    ----------------------------------------

He read the letter again for the umpteenth time and didn't know what to do? The letter had come out of the blue and has shaken the hell out of him. It made him dig back into those memories which he had buried in some corner of his heart. And now after three years, it all stared him right into his eyes. All those memories, good, bad and ugly, were in his face and asking the questions whose answer he didn't know..?? Whose answers he had never known..??

Aarav, famous as 'R' among his friends sitting in the open theater, was lost in his own thoughts, when someone suddenly snatched the letter from his hands bringing him back to the harsh realities of the world. He turned out to see his friend, Shama, going through the letter. And as soon as she was through, she fired tonnes of question towards him. And he could do nothing but stare, immersed in his thoughts.

    Passion to Enjoy..!

Summers are a good time to have a great vacation. And one of the best place to travel is to visit Branson, Missouri. I can vouch for this as afriend of mine who visited there told me about it. In her words, 'There is simply no better way to have a great time than taking a trip to Branson and if you stay at The Hilton Promenade at Branson Landing and the Hilton Branson Convention Center Hotel, then you are sure to have one hell of a vacation..!!'. Situated within the electrifying entertainment capital of the Midwest in Branson, Missouri, the Hiltons of Branson offer guests access to shops, boutiques, restaurants, a river walk and other attractions. I love shopping and the waterfront in this area is truly beautiful. I love the waterfront shopping, dining and entertainment adventure in this place. Its truly an experience to have.

    Childhood Simulator by Prateek Kinger

A poem by my friend, Prateek Kinger.

    CHILDHOOD SIMULATOR

    Obscured in the pensive haze,
    Perplexed in the memory maze..
In my eyes that unperspicuous vision,
With time, experiencing that memory fission..

    From start to end,
All moments of that childhood day..
    Recalling all those,
I wish the time could stay..

    The chilly winter dawn,
When dreams were on their prime.
& Mum used to wake me up,
    Telling the wrong time..

FaceVsion TouchCam N1 - The Skype certified web-cam

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of faceVsion Technology USA. All opinions are 100% mine.

If there is one invention that I am really waiting for, it would be to able to see a distant person while talking to them without any hassles of phones and cameras..!!

But this is just a fantasy, in the real world I am really happy with the way Skype video calls presents it. Though your video camera has to be really good, if you wanna enjoy or reap the benefits of a video call. Because it is seen, generally the quality of imagery on our screen leaves much to be desired and thus ruining the experience.

    Pluto, not a planet

    Hey,
I know its quite late in the day. It was way back in 2006 that Pluto was declared no longer as a planet.
and our solar system, as we knew it had changed forever.

But this comes because there are still people here who are uncertain about the status of Pluto. They don't know is it a planet or not..? Some say, its not a planet, agreed. But its no longer part of our solar system.

So, its for all those and many others, I have got this list prepared -
    • Pluto is no longer a planet. - True
    • Pluto is a dwarf planet. - True

    When he fell in love...

I had been wanting to write a story for a while now. And today I like to start with it. It would be published in frequent posts (only if I manage to complete it.).

So here is the first part of, When He Fell In Love...
     ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Dear R,

I miss you a lot today. I miss those wonderful days we spent together. I miss the fun we had teasing each other. I miss the games we used to play in your garden. It's been 3 long years since I've seen you and there's a lot that I had learn about myself and our relation in this gap.

In these 3 years, I had met many people. I had seen a bigger world. There were all kinds of people, some good, some bad. There were also people who cared a lot for me. But all along, I felt like a loner.

How to Type Indian Rupee Symbol

We all know Indian Rupee has officially got its symbol. But it is not yet available on the keyboards and thus preventing it to be used by anyone. And our government has said, it would take more than a year for the symbol to become commercially available. And thus a big setback for all of those who were counting on to use it.

But not to worry. Manglore based, Foradian Technologies Pvt. Ltd. has created a font called Rupee_Foradian. It can be downloaded from here and used for free.

    How to Use it..??
    • After downloading the font, a .ttf file, copy it to your fonts folder, C:/Windows/Fonts
    • Open a word file, type the first character on the keyboard that is just below the escape button, ~ .
    • Select the character and apply the Rupee_Foradian font.
    • That's it. The Rupee symbol appears...!!

Here is a video that would help you -

    Power of words

I was just browsing through my old mails and came across this short story. Thought it would be nice to share it with you guys...

A group of frogs were traveling through the woods, and two of them fell into a deep pit. When the other frogs saw how deep the pit was, they told the two frogs that they were as good as dead. The two frogs ignored the comments and tried to jump up out of the pit with all their might. The other frogs kept telling them to stop, that they were as good as dead. Finally, one of the frogs took heed to what the other frogs were saying and gave up. He fell down and died.

The other frog continued to jump as hard as he could. Once again, the crowd of frogs yelled at him to stop the pain and just die. He jumped even harder and finally made it out.

    Chicken Or Egg..??

It has been an age old question, what came first, Chicken or Egg..??
    Chicken..?? Egg..?? Chicken.?? Egg..?? What..??
No one knows, it has only been only predictions and predictions. But only till now..!!

It’s true – British researchers have done a scientific experiment and discovered, conclusively, that the chicken came first. Hurray..!!! Finally the answer..!!

    Rupee gets a symbol...!

India finally got a symbol for the Rupee on Thursday, denoting the strength of its economy, and joined a select club of countries whose currencies have a unique identity. The cabinet approved the symbol - an amalgam of the Devnagiri 'Ra' and the Roman capital 'R' without the stem and two parallel lines running at the top. The parallel lines symbolize the equal to sign.

With the gaining of the symbol, the Indian rupee joins the club of US dollar, British pound, European euro and Japanese yen that currently have their own symbols.

The symbol was designed by D Udaya Kumar, who is with the Department of Design at IIT Guwahati. Explaining the significance of the design, he said it is based on the Indian Tricolor.

"My design is based on the Tricolor with two lines at the top and white space in between. I wanted the symbol for the Rupee to represent the Indian flag," said Kumar.

Lets hope, with a new symbol Indian economy reaches new high..!!

    Unveiling the symbol now..!!!
    (Drum-roll..!!!)

    I walk and walk...

Life is like a very very long road,
On which I have to walk,
    And yes, I am walking,
    Without any feelings,
    But I am walking alone,
    Without even my shadow,
My own Shadow left me long before,
Its strange but now we are not in touch,
    Yeah I am still walking,
    To reach at my destination,
But I am still walking alone..
